U.S. will give detainees Geneva rights

I applaud President Bush for finally extending protections under the Geneva Conventions to the detainees at Guantanamo Bay. It is unfortunate that it has taken this long for it to happen and that it took last week's Supreme Court Ruling for Bush to be forced into doing so. Perhaps now the image of the United States abroad will now improve, as we have shown that our system does not tolerate gross violations of human rights. Let's hope this precedent prevents our government from ever making this mistake again. For more on the story, here is the memo from the Department of Defense stating the application of the Geneva Conventions to the detainees.
